Eighth Global Environment Facility (GEF) South Asia Constituency Meeting.Thimphu, Bhutan. 28 October 2013 – The 8th GEF South Asia Constituency Meeting is being held in Thimphu from 28th-29th October, 2013 with the participants from 6 countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka) of South Asia Constituency and GEF implementing agencies, UNDP and World Bank. The Meeting is chaired by Secretary, GNHC, who was appointed GEF Council Alternate Member for South Asia in September this year.
The primary objective of the meeting is to prepare for the 45th GEF Council Meeting in November in Washington DC. The specific issues include GEF 6 programming, GEF project cycle streamlining measures, accreditation of GEF project agencies, responses to the findings of Mid-term evaluation on System for the Transparent Allocation of Resources (STAR) and GEF fund replenishment.
GEF’s assistance to Bhutan began since 7th five year plan (1992-1997) with a total grant of USD 10 million. Since then, GEF has played a pivotal role in addressing the underlying drivers of environment degradation in Bhutan. GEF, to date, has supported around USD 45 million, including its commitment for the 11th five-year plan of USD 11.491 million and 4.5 million to support climate change and land degradation projects, respectively.
