Signing of the Local Governance Sustainable Development Program signed by GNHC Secretary & the Development partners.

Local Governments receive support from Denmark, European Union, Switzerland, UNCDF, UNDP and UNEP

Local Governments will receive financial support from the Local Governance Sustainable Development Program (LGSDP) funded by multiple development partners to supplement implementation of 11th FYP activities. The program, designed to contribute to achieving the 11th FYP goal, aligns with the timeframe and strategic context of the 11th FYP.

The emphasis of the new program is on “implementation at the local government level” but with cognizance of the important linkages with central agencies in terms of coordination, policy support, capacity development and technical backstopping. The program has three major outcomes or ‘components’: (i) inclusive and equitable socio-economic development at local level; (ii) conservation and sustainable use of environment at local level; and (iii) strengthening good governance at local level.

The Government of Denmark, the European Union, Government of Switzerland, the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will together support the Royal Government of Bhutan in its endeavour to maximize direct participation of the people in the development and management of their own social, economic and environmental well-being and minimize the negative impacts of a changing environment.

The agreement between the Royal Government of Bhutan and the development partners was signed on 31st October 2013 by the Secretary, Gross National Happiness Commission and representatives from the development partners. The LGSDP as the joint program has been initiated to enhance harmonization and alignment of support to the government by the development partners. The program, which has an indicative total fund of Nu. 1,000 million, will be implemented over a period of 5 years beginning November 2013 by Department of Local Governance, Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs.
